Sir Geoff Hurst believes the Football Association should NOT appoint another foreign coach to succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager, and insists the next boss MUST be English.
A long list of managers have already been linked with the role in the seven days since Hodgson’s resignation following the Three Lions’ embarrassing Euro 2016 exit to Iceland.
The likes of Arsene Wenger, Laurent Blanc, Claudio Ranieri, Jurgen Klinsmann and even Wales boss Chris Coleman have been mentioned, while Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate has reportedly turned down the job.
Glenn Hoddle has also received heavy backing from pundits, with Harry Redknapp insisting the former England and Tottenham manager is PERFECT for the job.
And World Cup-winning legend Hurst has told talkSPORT that, after a change of heart, he believes the FA MUST pick an Englishman.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the 1966 hat-trick hero said: “I’ve actually changed my mind, because I thought a while ago that we should be looking for the best man worldwide to do it.
“But we’ve had two foreign managers who didn’t make any particular difference for me, so I think we do need an English manager to run the England team.”
Asked if Hoddle be his preferred choice, Hurst replied: “Yes.
“With his experience and his knowledge, Glenn would be a very strong candidate.”
A number of ex-players have also put their name into the hat, with the likes of Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand just two to have voiced their desire to enter the England set-up.
But Hurst insists they lack the coaching experience to be considered for the job.
He added: “There are so many names already coming out, even people like Shearer and Ferdinand
“But really, it’s very difficult to start putting your name forward to be the boss of England when you’ve had almost no coaching experience at all, even at club level.
“So it surprises me when people like that put their name forward.
“Glenn Hoddle of course has managed before and he’s a fantastic coach, and there’s an opportunity there, but we want to get it right and we want to have an improvement
