Sergio Aguero’s farewell heroics and record against Chelsea mean it wouldn’t be ‘sentiment’ if he starts for Man City and bows out in Champions League final

Nothing says ‘pick me’ like two goals in five minutes from the bench the week before a Champions League final.

And if Sergio Aguero’s Premier League farewell wasn’t enough to convince Pep Guardiola to give him a chance for one final goodbye against Chelsea, his record against the Blues might.

With 15 goals against them in 22 appearances, the Argentine could yet provide a huge parting gift for Manchester City.

The veteran striker will leave the club this summer after ten glorious years – but his final match could yet be the most important, or at least on par with QPR in 2012.

Following his incredible Etihad sign off against Everton, there are calls for him to start the Porto showpiece against Chelsea on Saturday as City look to claim a first-ever Champions League title – live on talkSPORT.

And according to former City winger Trevor Sinclair, it wouldn’t be a sentimental selection from Guardiola after Aguero reminded everyone of his class in recent weeks.

Sinclair told Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast: “His performance off the bench against Everton was ridiculous.

“Talk about stepping up to the plate on your occasion! He did that massively, two goals and one of them was an absolute worldie.

“Guardiola said sentiment won’t come into it, but off the back of that performance, if you’re going to put your best striker in, it’s got to be Aguero, so he could start.

“That could be a little bit of a surprise for Thomas Tuchel.”

Guardiola has been uncharacteristically rigid with his front three in Europe this season, using a false no. 9 system with Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva up top.

However, Glenn Hoddle expects Aguero to cause Chelsea problems off the bench on Saturday night.

The former Blues man told talkSPORT: “I think he’s an asset off the bench. It depends how the game is going, but what a player to bring on.

“I don’t see him starting, I think Guardiola likes the system, especially as Chelsea have three at the back.”

The Champions League final is LIVE on talkSPORT this Saturday, kick-off 8pm
